1889 - 2000

Club History

Killererin have records of its GAA Club being formed and affiliated, going back as far as 13th December 1889. The Club was then named, Killererin John Dillon's. The first games played within the Club were under the John Dillon's Club name. The Club, as we know it today, Killererin GAA was formed in 1955. It was then a Junior Club and
won its first title in 1957, the North Board JuniorLeague title. They defeated Mountbellew to claim that first victory. Players from that team still live hale and hearty in the Parish today and are very proud of their history making within the Club. In the beginning, Killererin consisted mainly of that same said junior team, with the younger players at that time playing for neighbouring parishes. Fr. Ollie Hughes (R.I.P.), being one such Great that won a County Minor medal with Corofin. In the intervening years, Killererin formed its own Minor team, and they won their first North Board Minor Championship in 1967 and in the following year of '68, the Club won its first County Title. They defeated Woodford in the County Junior Final on a score line of 4-10 to no score. Killererin moved up to the Senior rankings within the GAA with that win and fielded a Senior team for the first time in '69 and have maintained their Senior status ever since.

In 1968 Killererin won the County Junior Championship. The rise to senior level was marked by seven consecutive defeats in the first round of the senior championship but success arrived in style in 1976 managed by Paddy Rooney with not only a first round win over corofin at senior championship level but a stunning County Senior title with further victories over Dunmore McHales, Ballinasloe and Mountbellew. The dream continued with victories over Aughawillan Leitrim Garrymore Mayo to capture the Connaught Club Championship (score 3-8 to 0-5) and on to an All-Ireland semi-final appearance against Ballerin Derry. A crushing defeat brought an end to the dream. The team returned in 1978 to repeat the heroics of ' 76 with championship victories over Mountbellew, Moycullen, Dunmore McHales, Corofin in a replay and Milltown in the County Final, again in a replay.(score 2-6 to 0-11). A formidable set of scalps but more were to follow in the Connaught Club Championship with victories over Roscommon Gales, Tourlestrane Sligo and Castlebar Mitchels.(score 1-11to 1-4) There was no way past the might of Nemo Rangers Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final but a Senior League Final win over Caltra rounded off a unique treble at the end of a memorable year. Also in 1982 the Junior League and County Junior Championship titles were obtained, this brought to an end Paddy's career as manager.

Despite some under-age success including an U21 B County victory in 1997, 21 years were to pass before Killererin won it's next Senior County title in 1999. On that occasion, we beat An Cheathrú Rua on a score line of 1-12 to 1-8, Gerry Daly being the manager. Gerry and that team were indeed very unlucky not to put back to back titles together, when they were beaten by Annaghdown in the 2000 County final, by the narrowest of margins, a single point.
